Why I Left a Six-Figure Tech Career to Help Strangers Reclaim Their Money

August 23, 20266 min read

Grab a cup of coffee and sit with me for a minute. If you’d told me five years ago that I’d be spending my days hunting down government paperwork and calling strangers to tell them they have thousands of dollars waiting for them, I probably would have laughed.

Back then, my life looked exactly like what "success" is supposed to be. I was working in the high-octane world of big tech, the kind of career with a six-figure salary, fancy office perks, and a resume that included names like Google and the FBI. I had the stability, the prestige, and the "shiny" life.

But every morning, as I sat behind my dual monitors, something felt off. I was helping massive corporations get more efficient and helping government agencies streamline data, but I wasn't helping people. Not in the way that makes your heart feel full at the end of the day.

I realized I was climbing a ladder that was leaning against the wrong wall. So, I did something that made my financial advisor wince: I walked away from it all to start Heritage Surplus Solutions.

The Moment Everything Changed

I’ve always been a mission-driven person. Maybe it’s the veteran in me (Go Army!), but I’ve always needed to feel like I’m fighting for something that matters.

The turning point came when I stumbled upon a piece of information that felt like a punch to the gut. I learned that every single year, thousands of families lose their homes to foreclosure. That’s tragic enough on its own. But what I didn't know, and what most of those families don't know, is that many of those homes sell for more than what was owed in taxes or mortgage debt.

That extra money? It’s called surplus funds (or overages). And by law, that money belongs to the person who lost the house.

But here’s the kicker: The government usually doesn't go looking for you to give it back. They don't send a friendly "Hey, you have $40,000 waiting for you" letter. Instead, they wait. They wait for a few months or a year, and if no one claims it, the state just... keeps it.

Billions of dollars are sitting in government accounts right now, money that belongs to single moms, struggling veterans, and families who just went through the worst financial crisis of their lives.

When I saw that, I couldn't "un-see" it. I knew I had found my new mission.

"Always Forward"

Transitioning from tech to a startup in the financial recovery space wasn't easy. There were a lot of late nights and a lot of moments where I wondered if I’d made a huge mistake. But I leaned on my personal motto: Always Forward.

In the military, you learn that no matter how hard the terrain is or how tired you are, you keep moving toward the objective. You don't get stuck in the "what-ifs." You find a way to serve the person next to you and you move forward.

I wanted to build a company that reflected those values, integrity, service, and a complete lack of greed. I knew that the people I wanted to help were already stressed and likely wary of anyone offering "free money." Foreclosure is a traumatic event. It leaves you feeling burned by the system.

That’s why I built Heritage Surplus Solutions on a No Recovery, No Fee model. I didn't want to be another bill for a family that’s already struggling. I wanted to take on 100% of the risk. If I can’t get your money back, you don’t owe me a dime. I pay for the attorneys, the researchers, the notaries, and the filing fees.

Because for me, this isn't about the paycheck. It’s about the "calling."

Why This Work Matters More Than a Tech Salary

People ask me all the time if I miss the tech world. Do I miss the high-end coffee machines and the corporate bonuses? Honestly? Not for a second.

Let me tell you about a typical day now. Instead of looking at lines of code, I’m looking at property records. I’m finding a mom who lost her house two years ago after a divorce and is now working two jobs just to keep her kids in a small apartment. I call her and tell her that there’s $25,000 sitting in a county account with her name on it.

At first, she’s skeptical. Who wouldn't be? But then we do the work. We handle the complex legal paperwork, we navigate the red tape, and a few months later, I get to call her and tell her the check is on the way.

The sound of relief in her voice, the way she realizes she can finally put a down payment on a new, stable home, that is worth more than any tech salary I ever earned.

A Mission for the Forgotten

I specifically focus a lot of my energy on veterans and single mothers. As a veteran myself, it breaks my heart to see someone who served our country lose their equity because they didn't know the rules of the game. And as someone who understands the pressure of providing for a family, I know how life-changing a surplus check can be for a mother trying to restart her life after a foreclosure or divorce.

We aren't just "reclaiming money." We are reclaiming a future. We are giving people the capital they need to get back on their feet and find affordable housing again.

What I’ve Learned Since Leaving the Six-Figure Life

If there’s one thing this journey has taught me, it’s that there is a massive gap between "the law" and "justice."

Legally, the government can keep that money if you don't ask for it. But is it just? Absolutely not. My job is to bridge that gap. I’ve traded my high-tech tools for a different kind of expertise, navigating the bureaucratic maze that keeps people from their own money.

It’s not always glamorous. It involves a lot of digging through old records and dealing with stubborn government clerks. But every time we successfully recover funds, it feels like a victory for the "little guy."

We’re In This Together

If you or someone you know has been through a foreclosure, whether it was last month or five years ago, please know that you might not be at the end of the road. There might be a "part two" to your story that includes a significant financial recovery.

I started Heritage Surplus Solutions because I believe everyone deserves a fair shot, even after a setback. I wanted to use the skills I learned in the military and in high-level tech to fight for you.
